Organist - Choir Director - Uniting Parishes of Saints Athanasius and Joan of Arc Evanston, Illinois Job Overview Effective July, 2022
This position is an exempt position based upon an average of 26 hours weekly and not less than 10 hours a week. Prospective candidates must be VIRTUS compliant. The Uniting Parishes of St. Athanasius and St. Joan of Arc have an established history of fine liturgical music in all liturgical styles. The uniting parish will offer liturgies at both campus sites and the Organist/Choir Director will be expected to serve both campus sites for liturgical music.

Position Requirements:
1. Technical proficiency on the organ and piano (see inventory of instruments). Demonstrated experience in choral conducting in a church or school setting.
2. Professional demeanor and high degree of organizational skills.
3. The planning and selection of all liturgical music. Pastor has final approval.
4. Accompany weekend liturgies. a. Saturday Vigil Mass. b. 2 Sunday Masses.
5. Rehearsal and coaching of professional cantors.
6. Develop Parishioner choir participation and engage the congregation in order to expand their participation in the music program. Remain cognizant of the range of musical preparation of the voluntary members of the choir and is supportive of both the musically trained and untrained.
7. Provide music accompaniment for Funerals, Weddings, which is selected by Family and/or couple with Pastor. Organist may need to be available to consult via phone or email.
8. Other liturgical services as indicated by the Pastor eg: Stations of the Cross. Christmas Concert, Easter Concert All Holy Days of Obligation, as determined by the Pastor.
9. Collaborate with Contemporary Music Director and Children’s Choir Director.
10. Availability to provide accompaniment to both the Contemporary Liturgy and the Children’s Choir as needed – eg: substitute / vacation time.
11. Prepare an annual budget for approval.
12. Keeps work areas neatly maintained and ensures that the choir room, storage areas, and church facilities related to the music program are organized.
13. Coordinates the maintenance, tuning and repair of all musical instruments owned by the church.
14. Handles the purchase of all music for the music program, observing budgetary guidelines.
15. Attendance at staff meetings is mandatory. During Choir Season, which normally runs from the end of September thru the end of May:
1. Plan and conduct weekly TBD choir rehearsal in Church.
a. Choir will normally sing at a Sunday Morning Mass.
b. Major Holy Days
2. Develop a plan for Choir concert during Advent / Lent. A solid understanding and empathy for the Catholic Liturgy. A willingness to be present and reasonably available to the parish community during parish social events.
Inventory of instruments St Athanasius Karl Wilhelm (Quebec) tracker organ 1998 (Opus 147). 2 manuals, 25 stops. Steinway Model B (1942) St Joan of Arc Mason and Hamlin 6ft Baby Grand (1925) recently restored. Vintage Rodgers electronic organ.
