Description:

The success of the St. Joseph's music ministry depends upon the congregation’s ability to find inspiration in praising God by singing. The Assistant Director of Music is responsible for supporting the Director of Music. This part-time position entails providing leadership and a visionary perspective for the music program at St. Joseph.

The responsibilities extend to assisting in the coordination of musicians, cantors and choirs. An essential aspect of the position involves cultivating a worship-centered culture among the congregation, and collaborating with staff members to create impactful worship experiences.

Requirements:

  • Support the Director of Music’s efforts to define and execute a contemporary vision for inspiring congregational participation in worship through excellent musicianship, enthusiastic choir singing, and a song choice that favors liturgical worship music.
  • Assist in song selection and the planning for various liturgical seasons and special liturgies.
  • Play piano and lead music worship for an average 2-3 weekend masses.
  • Maintain the choir calendar, the parish website’s music related content and the worship planning software.
  • Oversee the organization and upkeep of the music library, as well as the licenses for worship software.
  • Be available to play piano and sing for other liturgical events, such as, Confirmation, First Communions, Feast Days, Christmas, Easter, etc. as required throughout the year. This also extends to participating in parish weddings and funerals (for which a separate stipend will be provided) as agreed with the Director of Music.
  • Organize, copy, and distribute sheet music to singers and musicians well in advance of scheduled choir rehearsals, ensuring ample preparation time for the songs to be rehearsed effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Possess exceptional musical aptitude and proficiency in leading worship through music.
  • Knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgy, including liturgical documents, music resources, Roman Missal, and Lectionary. Listens to, communicates with, and regularly invites insights from lay leadership and staff, and interacts with all parishioners with respect, modeling Christian compassion and charity.
  • Demonstrate a proven capability to play piano or keyboard in an accompanist role, with additional proficiency in pipe organ playing being a valued asset.
  • Display administrative skills and ability to multitask, streamline operations, strategize, and execute a comprehensive vision aimed at fostering congregational involvement in musical worship.
  • Exhibit a demonstrated ability to collaborate with clergy members, staff members, parish leaders and volunteers.
  • Able to give and receive constructive feedback to foster a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Knowledgeable and familiar with a wide spectrum of Church liturgical music spanning various genres and styles, including a broad knowledge of contemporary Christian worship music.
  • Able to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as needed.
  • Possess outstanding interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in utilizing technology used for liturgical music, choral conducting, planning, administrative tasks, communication, and presentations.
