Description:

The success of the St. Joseph Catholic Church Music Ministry depends on the congregation being inspired to praise God by singing. The Director of Music will provide leadership and vision for the music program at St. Joseph, leading musicians, cantors and choirs, developing a culture of worship among the congregation, and collaborating with staff to create excellent worship experiences.

Requirements:

General Responsibilities

• Define and execute a contemporary vision for inspiring congregational participation in worship through excellent musicianship, and enthusiastic choir singing, and a song choice that favors contemporary liturgical worship music.

• Collaborate with clergy and pastoral staff to plan for liturgical seasons and special liturgies.

• Serve as the leader of musicians, cantors, and choir.

• Lead or oversee music worship at Mass on weekends and at other liturgies throughout the year including parish weddings and funerals.

• Direct rehearsals that bring out the best in assembled musicians and choir.

• Create an atmosphere of collegiality and esprit de corps among the music ministry including involvement in decisions and song selection as appropriate.

• Recruit, train, develop, and pastor musicians, cantors, and choir members.

• Engage and invite youth and newcomers to join music ministry.

• Identify, recruit, and manage other singers and musicians to supplement volunteer singers and musicians as needed.

• Work with parish leadership for setting music ministry vision and budget and work within budget.

Required Skills and Experience

• Pastoral worship leader with a focus and a mindset for ushering in God’s presence and leading others in an authentic and intimate experience of worship and understanding the role of music in evangelization and outreach.

• Strong musical talent and ability to lead worship musically.

• Experience leading congregational song and choral conducting.

• Demonstrated ability to play piano or keyboard as an accompanist (pipe organ a plus).

• Experience managing a group of musicians, cantors, and choir.

• Administrative skills and ability to multi-task, organize, plan, and execute a vision for inspiring the congregation to participate in singing.

• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with clergy, staff, parish leaders and volunteers.

• Demonstrated enthusiasm for giving and receiving constructive feedback.

• Knowledgeable and comfortable with Church liturgical music in all forms and styles, including broad knowledge of contemporary Christian worship music.

• Thorough understanding of the musical, liturgical, and pastoral judgments which must be made in selecting music for liturgy

• Ability to plan liturgical celebrations in line with official liturgical guidance and Catholic liturgical theology.

• Availability to work weekends and evenings as needed.

• Knowledgeable and comfortable with Catholic liturgical norms and ability to understand and support Catholic Church teaching, mission, and values.

• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

• Familiarity with technology used for liturgical music, choral conducting, planning, administration, communicating, and presenting
