Deacon John Cook

Deacon John Cook hosts this weekly half-hour program that explores a wide range of topics relevant to Chicago's Black and Catholic communities.  Deacon Cook serves at St. Felicitas Parish in Chatham and is very involved in organizing and overseeing youth programs in the Bronzeville neighborhood. 

The program is produced under the auspices of the Archbishop of Chicago's Black Catholic Initiative and his liaison, Fr. David Jones, an Archdiocesan Dean and Pastor of St. Benedict the African-East Parish in Englewood.


Deacon Davis Fair shared with us his call to the diaconate that includes crediting Fr. Tom Walsh in his determination to have him become one that sparked his interest. We talked briefly with his wife Roberta whom he is married to for 56 years. And finally, he shared his experience at the BCI Retreat and said that the question "why are you here" allowed him to ponder his response to the mission of being an ear for people and being called to service.

Dawn Valenti was our guest today and, she shared with us her responsibilities with Chicago Survivors, a not for profit organization formed to assist with persons affected by violence of a loved one. Dawn shared her experiences of the joys and difficulties of her job and how the organizations debriefing techniques and faith gets her through.

Finally, she shares her opinions on the violence in Chicago, initiatives begun by St. Sabina Church and what the upcoming Peace March that Cardinal Cupich plans to attend.

Pastor Kevin Brooks of the AME Church in Englewood speaks about the follow up programs and mission he has begun since the Good Friday march with Cardinal Cupich. He talked about his previous assignment in Baltimore and the Catholic Church's origins there and, what bought him to Chicago to concentrate on urban development.
