Black Catholic Initiative

Tuesdays 8-8:30 a.m.
Deacon John Cook

Deacon John Cook hosts this weekly half-hour program that explores a wide range of topics relevant to Chicago's Black and Catholic communities.  Deacon Cook serves at St. Felicitas Parish in Chatham and is very involved in organizing and overseeing youth programs in the Bronzeville neighborhood. 

The program is produced under the auspices of the Archbishop of Chicago's Black Catholic Initiative and his liaison, Fr. David Jones, an Archdiocesan Dean and Pastor of St. Benedict the African-East Parish in Englewood.


Christine Riley, An Augustus Tolton Scholar earned her Masters of Divinity degree st CTU and also works as a Program manager for the City of Chicago. She spoke with us about her childhood and Catholic Education as the formation her ministry work at her parish, St. Martin De Porres as Director of Religious Education.

Chris Mallette, executive director of the Chicago Violence Reduction Strategy spoke to us about his organization and his journey that firmly planted him in Chicago to reduce gang violence and those perpetrators responsible for the shootings. He has held numerous positions including working in a similar role for Mayor Daley and on the behalf of Chicago Public Schools. As football coach and esteemed lawyer he is equipped to reach most any individual with his vast knowledge and varied experiences.

David E. Lowery, former NAACP President of the South Suburban Branch visited with us and shared his current calling as CEO/DIR of Living and Driving While Black Foundation. He shared what he felt were the plagues (sin and lack of commitment to God) to challenge the black consciousness and leadership throughout America to unite and develop a different narrative to return to God.

Jeff Kidd was our guest this morning and he shared stories about his family Auto business which his father started. Recently they added a training component for auto technicians named the South Technical Center where they provide 3 and 6 month training programs to prepare graduates for good paying jobs.

Kianda Boyd share with us her steady involvement as youth minister at St. Ailbe church, as well as her busy work and school schedule as she pursues her masters degree. She mentioned how losing Pastor Larry Duris was hard for everyone but that his legacy and spirit remains as a inspiration for everyone. Finally, she talks about the upcoming youth retreat in July and her excitement for her future going forward.
