Deacon John Cook

Deacon John Cook hosts this weekly half-hour program that explores a wide range of topics relevant to Chicago's Black and Catholic communities.  Deacon Cook serves at St. Felicitas Parish in Chatham and is very involved in organizing and overseeing youth programs in the Bronzeville neighborhood.

The program is produced under the auspices of the Archbishop of Chicago's Black Catholic Initiative and his liaison, Fr. David Jones, an Archdiocesan Dean and Pastor of St. Benedict the African-East Parish in Englewood.

Our guests Deacon Greg Shumpert and Jackie Ingram talked about the mental health center on the west side in Garfield Park. We talked about the goals and process they have paved and the opportunities for other communities to duplicate their efforts. Kianda Boyd, Youth Ministry at St. Ailbe shared the story behind her award, The Unbroken Circle award she received at the Annual Commeration of the Civil Rights Movement. Finally, She talks about her busy ministerial and personal life and how she arrived at this juncture in her life.

Our guest updated us on the current track for vicariate 6 on Renew my Church. They shared the intricate framework and steps in sharing with each parish and respective groupings. Finally, they shared some feelings from the pews and how they have been most involved with the process and how best to facilitate the dialogue among their own. It has been a long and arduous process but, one in which the church must accomplish yet will be stronger and wiser for doing.
