Bishop Abramowicz Seminary program is unique. Founded by our Archbishop, Francis Cardinal George, in September 1999, it has annually recruited seminarians in Poland, who with the approval of their respective bishops there, have each freely elected to leave their native Poland with the idea of completing their seminary training here, first at Bishop Abramowicz Seminary Program in Chicago, then at Mundelein Seminary. The vision, the courage and faith of Cardinal George allowed Bishop Abramowicz Seminary to prepare and ordain over 25 priests, who serve in the Archdiocese of Chicago and other dioceses.
There are new promising outlooks for Bishop Abramowicz Seminary. After a transition year, Bishop Abramowicz Seminary moved to the Holy Name Cathedral convent. Together with Casa Jesus, a welcoming place has been created for seminary formation, prayer, enculturation, intensive English studies, and participation in the important archdiocesan liturgical events at the Holy Name Cathedral.
All of the seminarians come from Poland with some knowledge of English. They come to Chicago with open hearts and open mind, and do their best trying to improve their language skills, and adapt to a new culture. Leaving their families behind and not knowing what’s ahead of them is not always easy. They need our support and welcoming to continue their path to the priesthood.
These seminarians and priests are serving in the parishes of the Archdiocese of Chicago, both “American” and traditionally “Polish” parishes. Thus, the entire Archdiocese and all of us, its members, benefit. The selfless generosity of these young men from Poland deserves the fullest support from all of us as members of the Archdiocese.
On Sunday, September 12, 2010, Bishop Abramowicz Seminary will host our annual benefit dinner at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers, at 301 East North Water Street, Chicago, IL 60611.
