Week of Prayer for Christian Unity: Hope for the Church - Hope for the world

What If the two billion Christians who have been invited by the World Council of Churches and the Vatican prayed daily for Christian Unity during the Annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity from Tuesday, January 18 to Tuesday January 25, 2011?

What if all Christians in the Chicago Metropolitan area joined nineteen leaders from the Catholic, Orthodox, Episcopal and mainline, African-American, Evangelical Protestant Churches and prayed for Christian Unity during the 11th Annual Chicago Ecumenical Prayer Service

Church leaders from the Chicago area gather in song during an ecumenical prayer service to celebrate the 8th annual Chicagoland  "Week of Prayer for Christian Unity" at Christ Community Church in South Holland, Ill on Jan. 20, 2008. Bishop Timothy Lyne represented the Archdiocese of Chicago at the event. (Karen Callaway/Catholic New World)

What if these prayers, prepared by leaders of Orthodox, Catholic, Lutheran and Anglican Churches in Jerusalem, resulted in the people of Metropolitan Chicago recognizing their Christian neighbors and could say, as did the people observing the early Church 2000 years ago, "See how the Christians love one another"?

What If prayers for Christian Unity prayed in our churches for over one hundred years resulted in a reconciled Church of Jesus Christ providing hope to a fractured world seeking reconciliation?

If so, the prayer of Jesus, "That They All May Be One" (Jn 17:212) could come to be.
