Being Thankful for Marriage and Our Families

When Cardinal George first became the Archbishop of Chicago he proclaimed November to be Family Month. It seemed very appropriate since there are so many events this month associated with families: starting with All Saints and All Souls Day (or the Day of the Dead if you are of Mexican heritage) at the beginning of the month culminating in Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday.

We can all make our lists this year of what we have to be thankful for, and I hope everyone does. As for me, I am grateful:

  • That so many couples still are choosing to be married in the Catholic church. Even though the numbers of weddings are down from the past, a significant amount of people still do decide to marry in the church, and we work diligently to help them succeed in a healthy, holy, and happy lifelong marriage. Over 8,000 couples will attend a PreCana class this year.
  • What PreCana used to look like:
  • What it looks like now:
  • We’re happy that over 350 couples married 50 years renewed their vows at our annual Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass in September and for the wonderful volunteers and hosts at St. John Brebeuf parish.
  • We’re excited to be part of the first online ondemand Marriage Preparation program that will launch soon. Then couples separated by distance or around the country will be able to take marriage preparation when it is convenient for them, and can follow up with the priest or deacon that is marrying them. I’m especially thankful for the Marriage Group and the Office of Radio and TV that is working tirelessly with us to get  this ready:

I will be lucky to spend Thanksgiving with my wife, some of my five sons, my daughter in law and grandson. May you have a wonderful thanksgiving, filled with love and time with your loved ones.

I thank God everyday for the Sacrament of Matrimony. The graces we have received on the day of our marriage have continued to bless us on our journey of 48 years. WE know God never sends more than he sends the grace for us to deal with "life." We are truly blessed.
