Life is a gift from God

God created us out of His love for us, and because he loves us so much, He allows us to collaborate with Him to create new life. How cool is that? We get to partner with the Creator to bring new life into the world. God could have created us in any way He could imagine, or not. Yet He chose to form us in such a way that we would have a part in continuing creation.

Many don’t realize how precious a life is. We are told that rather than seeing a pregnancy as a gift from God, it is simply a choice. Many times, it is more convenient to refuse the gift than to embrace it. And worse, women are often encouraged to dispel of the gift all in the name of empowerment, freedom, or even convenience. Our world does not make it easy for pregnant women to choose life.

Choosing life wasn’t easy for our Blessed Mother either. Not only did she face an unplanned pregnancy out of wedlock, but she also faced potential death. She had everything stacked against her: she was a teenager, not married, unemployed, and sure to face the judgment of family, friends, and the community for agreeing to carry and give birth to her baby. It seemed she would have absolutely no support. Yet, God ensured that she had the support of a husband, her family, and the community. She was the human tabernacle, chosen to house and keep safe the Son of God. Along with God, she collaborated to bring our Savior into the world. Imagine what the world would be like if Mary had not said, “Yes” to God?

Let us look at all pregnant women as a tabernacle of the Lord, bringing hope to our community. A pregnant woman is housing a child of God with all of the potential of His plan.  She is called to care for and nurture God’s creation, in a way very similar to our Blessed Mother.

In celebration of these sacred women, chosen to nurture a child of God, we are hosting two Masses on Mothers’ Day, Sunday May 8th at 12:30 PM. Please join us in Christian support and to thank expectant mothers for choosing life as they receive a special blessing. These Masses will be held:

  • at Holy Name Cathedral, celebrated by our Vicar General, Father Ron Hicks
  • at St Joseph, in Back of the Yards, celebrated in Spanish by Bishop John Manz.
