Save the Date to Pray For Marriage

Are you going to any weddings soon? This past week Marilyn and I received two “Save the Date” postcards in the mail for weddings that will happen this summer.

Over the next several months while we are “saving the date” I hope and pray that both of these young couples will take the necessary steps to do all they can to prepare for their upcoming marriage. The Family Ministries Office always encourages engaged couples to take a premarital inventory such as FOCCUS or the new Catholic Couple Checkup as part of their preparation.  Both of these inventories assist couples to assess the strengths and challenges in their relationship.

Another component of their preparation process should be attending a diocesan or parish based marriage preparation program. These programs, facilitated by trained married couples, help engaged couples to understand the Catholic vision of sacramental marriage while developing everyday communication and conflict resolution skills.

While the engaged couples will be busy in the months leading up to their weddings, Marilyn and I will be doing more than saving the date for their weddings. We will also be praying for the couples every day, by repeating our marriage vows: “I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad in sickness and in health. I will love you and honor you all the days of my life.”

I would ask all married couples to model what happy, healthy, holy marriages look like and ask all Catholics to pray every day for the success of marriage. Then we will all be doing more than just saving the date!
