POSITION OVERVIEW

The Sacred Liturgy is the highest form of prayer and, as such, needs to be celebrated with dignity and devotion to the way the Church intends the liturgy to be celebrated. Integral to the celebration of the Church’s liturgy—especially the Eucharist—is the sacred music that accompanies various liturgical actions. A Director of Music Ministry should be well versed and skilled in music and song but also understand the dynamics of the Church’s liturgy.

As a person of faith, the Director of Music Ministry must exercise this ministry knowing that he/she ultimately serves the higher purpose of leading the congregation in prayer that brings praise and glory to God, who is the sole and proper essence of worship.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Liturgical Formation

  • Partner with the pastor to fulfill the parish’s call to celebrate the Church’s liturgy with a prayerful reverence.
  • Collaborate with other parish staff to integrate sacred music into the life of other ministries whenever it might be appropriate/needed. (Choir/Children’s Choir)
  • Encourages liturgical participation of parishioners in the area of singing and music to encourage their growth as disciples and provide a personal encounter with Jesus through the liturgy.

Administration

• Prepares and manages the music ministry budget in collaboration with the pastor and business manager.

• Maintains and assures compliancy of music ministry volunteers in the area of child protection, etc.

• Records and reports use of hymns/music to proper licensing agents.

• Maintain and oversee the maintenance of and upkeep of all parish musical instruments.

• Oversees the production of worship aides for the various parish liturgies.

• Schedules supply/guest musicians and/or cantors when needed and agreed upon with the pastor.

• Select appropriate and approved hymns for use at Sunday and other parish liturgies that encourage and assist the assembly to express the gift of faith that is within them.

• Coordinate, schedule, and provide practical preparation for musicians and cantors for all Sunday Masses and other major celebrations including weddings and funerals.

• Build a repertoire of music that encourages participation and singing at liturgy that takes advantage of the variety of styles of hymnody approved for use in the liturgy.

• Assign musicians and cantors for the remaining Masses.

• Be a resource for any volunteer/paid musicians/cantors.

Funerals

  • Cover all funerals or assign musicians as needed.
  • Work with family in regards to the selection of music for funeral mass.

• Coordinate musicians and/or cantors for all Weddings and quinceñeras.

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimally, a Bachelor’s Degree in music or equivalent.
  • A degree or training in liturgy is highly preferred.
  • Understand liturgical music and be well versed in the various hymns and music styles that are appropriate to the Church’s liturgy.
  • Exhibit proficiency in organ and piano and vocal technique.
  • Proficiency in other instruments would be highly valuable.
  • Ability to work well with others including good communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use modern technology would be highly valuable.
