Description:

The Coordinator of Sacramental Preparation and Children’s Ministry develops and implements a plan for lifelong comprehensive catechesis with a primary focus on pre-school, kindergarten, 1st through 5th grade within the parish including all aspects of sacramental preparation for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. This role also oversees Vacation Bible School (VBS) and Open Doors Ministry (ODM). This is a dynamic position that St. James believes will play a crucial role in helping our members to be disciples of Christ and make disciples of Christ.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develops and implements a plan for comprehensive catechesis for children/youth based on the plan for comprehensive catechesis of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Selects appropriate catechetical materials based on the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops and Archdiocesan guidelines. This includes gathered catechetical sessions, retreats, prayer opportunities, services, and liturgy.

• Establishes long-range and short-term goals and outcomes for effective parish catechesis. Evaluates effectiveness of catechetical programs.

• Manages all aspects of the First Reconciliation and First Eucharist for the Religious Education students and St. James School students.

• Recruits, trains, supervises and evaluates Catechists and Ministers of Catechesis, and support staff.

• Oversees volunteer-run programs including Vacation Bible School (VBS) and Open Doors Ministry (ODM).

• Working closely with the team’s administrative assistant, manages communication, including website, social and bulletin content.

• Manages annual budget for Sacramental Preparation and Children’s Ministry.

Requirements:

Education Required:

BS or BA, with major in theology, education, pastoral studies, or relevant to position.

• Previous work in the field of education, administration, management, program/level coordinator, training of volunteer catechists, youth ministers and or other ministers.

• Exceptional communication skills written and orally.

• Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.

• Comfortable working in a fast-paced office environment within a team.

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, web content management, social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter and Instagram).

• Practicing Catholic who fully adheres to and models the Church’s teachings in faith and morals (Cf., “Code of Ethics for Catechetical Leaders,” National Certification Standards for Lay Ecclesial Ministers. 2003. p. xxv.)

• Registered with the Protecting God’s Children/Virtus program. • Must be available for evening/weekend work.
