Description:

In joint collaboration with the Pastor, the Director of Youth Ministry will create, build, and lead an effective OLPH youth ministry program for high school and middle school youth to enhance and foster our youths’ spiritual formation. A primary goal will be to actively engage our parish teens beyond Confirmation which occurs in 8th grade. This position reports to the Pastor. It will involve communication and some collaboration with parents, volunteers, school and religious education administrators. The person in this role will be expected to articulate a dynamic vision for youth ministry; engage in short and long-term strategic planning; assess and promote best practices for youth ministry; and effectively serve all parish youth including those in OLPH’s parish school, religious education program, and area public and Catholic high schools. The position begins on July 1, 2017. Responsibilities include: Create, plan, develop, and implement all aspects of a youth ministry program with components of service, spiritual development, community building, and faith formation. Coordinate this new program in conjunction with several existing OLPH youth programs, including a Kairos retreat program, a teen Mass, and an annual summer mission trip. Focus over the short-term (1-3 yrs.) on building meaningful relationships with high school teens (and their parents) in freshman through junior years, creating new programming, and successfully bridging that programming to a robust KAIROS retreat program during senior year. Build participation in this new youth ministry program by communicating actively with OLPH parents, youth, school and religious education administrators, including likely social media use. Recruit and train adult volunteers for youth ministry and ensure adequate adult to youth ratios and verify Virtus training as needed. Advocate for youth and educate the parish about the hopes, concerns and needs of youth. Mentor youth in developing their leadership skills. Attend staff meetings and work collaborative with parish leadership and staff. Utilize resources for developing youth ministry programming and participate in continuing education events and training opportunities. Be a liaison between the church and other community organizations, people, and resources that relate to youth and youth ministries, including area youth and high school campus ministers. Represent the parish and Archdiocese of Chicago when attending archdiocesan wide events. Requirements:

The ideal candidate will be a practicing Catholic who models a Christian lifestyle and possesses: A minimum of 3-5 years of youth ministry experience or equivalent in parish or educational settings in order to successfully perform the essential responsibilities. A bachelor’s degree or higher preferably in a theological or pastoral discipline. The ability and desire to work evenings and weekends. Proficiency with social media and Microsoft office programs. A mature spirituality and a committed faith life. A demonstrated passion for empowering young people to live as disciples of Christ. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with varied audiences. The ability to engender trust and confidence of teenagers, and the strength of character to realize when that trust and confidence must be broken for the good of the young person. A demonstrated competency in multicultural, ecumenical, and interfaith issues. Ability to garner credibility and collaboration with OLPH parishioners and staff.
