Description:

Job Summary:

The custodian's primary responsibility shall be to maintain a safe, clean, and healthy physical environment at the school providing custodial, janitorial, and maintenance services so that full educational use of school facilities are available to students, staff, parents and the school community. 

The School Custodian will also assist the Maintenance and Facilities Manager with custodial and maintenance tasks in other Parish buildings such as the Church, Rectory and Parish Center.

Primary responsibilities:

• Meets regularly with the Maintenance and Facilities Manager to coordinate janitorial, custodial and maintenance services needed.

• Performs general cleaning and maintenance of the school building including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting and sanitizing according to established school criteria.

• May operate manual and power equipment used to clean floors.

• Sanitizes washroom fixtures, including toilets, urinals, washbowls, fixtures, walls, partitions and floors according to established practices and procedures.

• Removes recycle and refuse from the buildings and places in outside recycle and refuse containers.

• Maintains a supply of the necessary materials and equipment needed to effectively clean the school and church.

• Assists with the removal of snow from sidewalks and entrances to the all buildings.

• Maintains the safety and security of the building and grounds and performs the final security check of the facility at the completion of the shift.

• Moves and sets up chairs, tables, etc. as required for special events and for daily lunch.

• Interfaces with all levels of staff within the building, with members of the school and church community and others who utilize the facilities.

• Performs other related duties as may be necessary and assigned by Maintenance and Facilities Manager.

• Follows and implements safe work practices and wears appropriate protective equipment.

• Responds to emergency calls for custodial assistance as needed, which may require additional protocols for safe handling and disposal of blood borne pathogens, hazardous materials, and other non-standard waste.

• May perform the duties of the supervisor when he/she is not available.

• May train new team members in custodial job duties.

• May provide direction for assigned custodial staff in performance of daily duties.

• Perform inspections on work areas maintained by other custodial staff and contracted vendors.

• Provide service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible, and professional engagement.

• Perform other duties as assigned by Business Manager, Principal, and/or pastoral staff.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

• Three years of custodial experience.

• Personal and personnel management skills.

• Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work activities.

• High school diploma and two years of technical college training with three years of building maintenance experience.

• Experience training custodial staff and providing daily work orders.

• Experience operating all types of automatic and power cleaning and maintenance equipment.

• Experience repairing or replacing electrical and mechanical system components, completing small carpentry projects, and painting and refinishing rooms.

• Hold a valid driver’s license and regularly drive a motor vehicle.

• Knowledge of body fluid and bio-hazard cleanup.

• Knowledge of custodial principles, practices, and safety procedures.

• Basic knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, painting, plastering, machine servicing, or electrical.

• Ability to meet physical demands required of position, including ability to: Walk or stand for long periods of time, bend, twist, squat, crawl and climb ladders in the course of duties, lift 50-pound mop bucket to 30” height to dump in a sink, 50-pound box from floor level to waist multiple times, and 50-pound trash container to shoulder height to dump in dumpster, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity

• Availability to work evenings and weekends; and overtime as needed.
