Description:

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer, the Director of Communications and Public Relations sets and guided strategy and implementation of communications and public relations messages and activities to further the mission of the Archdiocese of Chicago.
 
 
Responsibilities:
 

  • Supervises and executes all external communications and public relations efforts for the Archdiocese of Chicago.
  • Leads crisis management and preemptive planning efforts, working with the Chief Communications Officer.
  • Leads external communications efforts for Renew My Church.
  • Serves as media relations director responding to all media inquiries and requests as they come in to the archdiocese.
  • Cultivates and maintains relationships with media.
  • Manages proactive and reactive media relations efforts.
  • Coordinates, schedules and staffs Cardinal Cupich and other spokespeople interviews.
  • Staffs 24/7 media relations phone line.
  • Coordinates and serves as lead for archdiocesan press conferences and other media events.
  • Reviews and approves all press materials, media statements, news releases, media alerts and other external communication/print materials; develops materials as needed.
  • Reviews and manages design requests; funnels requests/projects to the creative director and director of design.
  • Provides communications and public relations support for archdiocesan parishes, schools, offices, initiatives and ministries through the development and implementation of strategic approaches to address needs.
  • Manages archdiocesan social media efforts working with the social media manager; provides strategic support and review.
  • Manages updates to archdiocesan Catholic schools’ website and other archdiocesan websites (as needed); provides strategic support and review.
  • Manages the development of a weekly newsletter for archdiocesan school principals and other principal-specific communications.
  • Leads communications efforts around the tax credit scholarship program and other important archdiocesan initiatives.
  • Ensures quality control of information and materials released by the archdiocese.

 
Administration:

  • Leads, mentors and manages direct reports.
  • Helps facilitate staff meetings.
  • Participates in job-related career development workshops and/or seminars, as needed/requested.
  • Participates in the budget tracking and preparation process.
  • Performs other duties delegated by the Chief Communications Officer.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations or related field required.
  • Spanish language fluency preferred
  • Experience required: 15+ years of communications, public relations experience; agency experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of the City and State political structure
  • Superior writing/editing and verbal communication skills.
  • Must remain flexible to the changing needs of the organization.
  • Must demonstrate understanding, respect and support for Catholic Church teaching, mission and values.
  • A willingness to work evenings and weekends, as needed.
