Basic Functions

The Director of Lay Ministry Staff Development serves as the main point of contact for all Archdiocesan lay staff serving in parish/pastoral center ministry roles. The Director designs and coordinates the delivery of the professional development programs, Archdiocesan and vicariate-based professional minister trainings and supports the formation, onboarding and work of the Parish Pastoral Councils. The Director collaborates with Lifelong Formation Coordinators, Parish Vitality Coordinators and Vicariate Ministry Commissions to ensure the holistic and ongoing development of lay ministers as outlined by the Renew My Church process. 

The Director of Lay Ministry Staff Development, in close collaboration with the Director of Recruitment and Placement of Ministry Staff, and the Director of the Institute for Lay Formation at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake (USML):

  • Ensures Lay Ecclesial Ministers (LEMs), and those serving in all ministry roles, have both the professional development support and ministerial formation to perform their service throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago.
  • Is responsible for ensuring appropriate training and tools are available to assist pastors to support the professional development of their ministry staffs and Parish Pastoral Councils.
  • Provides training and coordinates/delivers direct support, retreats, liturgical services, etc. as needed for all those serving in Archdiocesan ministry roles.
  • Supports the work of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council.


This role is instrumental in helping drive initiatives that support Renew My Church and Archdiocesan key priorities.

The Director serves as a liaison:

  • To the Cardinal for the Chicago Area Lay Ministers (CALM).
  • With national organizations to ensure the execution of best practices and programs to support the efficacy and ongoing formation of lay ministers in parish roles and ministry staff across the Archdiocese.


  • Supports successful execution of objectives related to Renew My Church and the Archdiocese of Chicago. 
  • Serves as the main point of contact for all parish/archdiocesan lay pastoral ministry staff in the Archdiocese.
  • Develops and offers professional development and training for lay pastoral ministry staff. 
  • Coordinates and delivers professional development and training for lay pastoral ministers.
  • Coordinates and delivers ongoing formation for lay pastoral ministers.
  • Develops and offers onboarding and ongoing formation/training for Parish Pastoral Councils.
  • Assists Pastors in ensuring proper development of the Parish Pastoral Councils.
  • Acts as a liaison to the Cardinal for Chicago Area Lay Ministers (CALM). 
  • Ensures compliance with Archdiocesan policies, regulations, and budget guidelines.
  • Executes other assignments and projects consistent with the responsibility level of this position.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.


  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university with study in Theology, Divinity, Pastoral Studies or equivalent professional experience.  Lay Ecclesial Minister certification a plus.
  • A record of leadership experience in a church or nonprofit organization.


  • A proven track record of program development and coaching or developing other ministers. 


  • Fully committed to the Catholic Church’s teaching on the Gospel of Life.


  • Demonstrated understanding, respect and support for Catholic Church teaching, mission and values, and ability to communicate this understanding.


  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse socioeconomic and ethnic audiences.


  • Demonstrated ability to train and develop professionals, including creating plans that achieved goals. Previous training and development of lay ministers is a plus.
  • Excellent ability to identify needs and then develop and implement plans to address the needs.


  • Strong decision making ability, judgment, and interpersonal skills.


  • Demonstrated ability to drive change.


  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office program including Word, Excel and Power


  • Working knowledge of communications strategies and social media practices a plus.


  • Conversational Spanish language skills a plus.
