Position Summary

Consistently exercises discretion and judgment to design and implement innovative and strategic approaches to engage, form, and accompany adult Catholics consistent with the Renew My Church initiative, and specializes in the formation of young couples for married life and the ongoing formation of newly married couples in all Archdiocesan parishes. In collaboration with the Director of the Office of Lifelong Formation and the senior coordinator team, this position uses advanced knowledge in Catholic theology  to set and execute strategies to identify, train, support and resource ministers in realizing the vision of the Archdiocese of Chicago for an engaged, evangelizing, and revitalized Church of disciples that transform their communities through witness to the love of Jesus. Must be able to work evenings and weekends.

Essential Function

  1. Uses advanced knowledge of Catholic theology to design, develop and implement a practical and engaging vision for the formation and enrichment of young and newly married couples.  This includes applying subject-matter ministry expertise to create and execute strategies for recruiting, forming and supporting marriage preparation facilitators, and other support ministry staff, as needed.
  2. Gathers, analyzes and interprets parish administrative and ministry information to design and develop innovative and customized programs for parishes that align with the objectives of Renew My Church.
  3. Provides subject-matter expertise to the Marriage Preparation and Adult Formation ministry team on how to design, develop and pilot approaches that accompany couples through marriage preparation and ongoing formation.  Analyzes the needs of parishes to determine and provide guidance on best practices for the development of facilitator training sessions.
  4. Guides and coordinates the Marriage Preparation and Adult Formation ministry team using advanced knowledge of Catholic theology in its development of approaches that form and accompany adults, in all parishes, in alignment with the principles and priorities of the Renew My Church.
  5. Using an analytical approach ensures the priorities and directives of the Office of Lifelong Formation, and Department of Parish Vitality and Mission are integrated into Family/Marriage initiatives.
  6. Represents the Marriage Preparation and Adult Formation ministry team on inter-department initiatives, including partnering with the Communications Team, Events Team, and Vicariate Coordinators.
  7. Audits and manages the status of all Marriage Preparation and Adult Formation ministry team initiatives, addresses issues timely and effectively, and ensures all priorities are completed in a satisfactory manner.  
  8. Proposes, analyzes, interprets and manages the Marriage Preparation and Adult Formation ministry budget.
  9. Provides support, as needed, for all Marriage Preparation and Adult Formation initiatives.  
  10. Leads and/or participates in committees, projects, or initiatives as needed.
  11. Possess ability to drive to and from individual parishes.
  12. May be given other assignments and projects consistent with the responsibility level of this position.


Education Required:       Bachelor’s Degree in Theology, Pastoral Ministry or related field of study from an accredited college or university, or equivalency. 

Must be a practicing Catholic and demonstrate understanding, respect and support for Catholic Church teaching, mission and values.

Education Preferred:      Master’s Degree in Theology or related field of study.

Experience Required:    At least three years of experience in formation, outreach, ministry and administration.

Experience preferred:    Five or more years of proven professional experience in the field of formation, outreach, ministry and administration as well as experience in leadership and management.

Skills Required:    Ability to mentor colleagues toward success. Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people, including persons with varied social, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. Excellent communications and conflict resolution skills. Working knowledge of all Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Power Point, Access and Publisher.

Skills Preferred:    Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Access and Publisher.

Must be an excellent communicator, detail-oriented and self-motivated. Able to respond effectively to change.  

Ability to foster a spirit of creativity, collaboration, professionalism, and accountability among members of the Marriage Preparation and Adult Formation ministry team.

Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional and spiritual growth and skill development.

Must possess a valid Illinois driver’s license.
