Position Summary

 The Planned Giving Director reports to the Senior Director of Development and is expected to work independently and as a member of the Development team. They are responsible for cultivating relationships with prospects and existing donors that are willing to make deferred financial gifts to benefit the mission of the Archdiocese of Chicago. They will have regular contact with pastors and their staff, donors and their representatives, high-level trustees and volunteers, staff and members of the community. 

The Planned Giving Director is expected to develop and maintain a current knowledge and understanding of Archdiocese of Chicago programs, and the tax and legal issues surrounding charitable giving. They are also expected to remain flexible to the needs of the department and the available schedules of prospective donor, to consistently treat everyone with dignity and respect, to work collaboratively to accomplish goals, to be honest and to take responsibility for his/her actions.

 

Responsibilities

  • Executes plan to promote and advance the number of planned gifts to benefit Archdiocesan initiatives, ministries parishes, and schools.
  • Identifies, cultivates and solicits prospects for bequests and other planned gifts.
  • Assists the Chief Development Officer, Senior Director of Development, and the Director of Principal Gifts in engaging donors, the Cardinal, and local pastors in cultivation as appropriate and stewardship and recognition.
  • Researches, identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards planned giving prospects through face-to-face visits, calls, written communications, e-mails, and direct response tools to acquire immediate, deferred, and future planned gifts (goal maintaining 100-125 prospects per year).
  • Responsible for the full range of activity required to administer matured planned gifts including developing gift proposals, monitoring and understanding all applicable state and national regulations and requirements, tracking probate process via communications with attorneys, trust officers, and personal representatives, and accounting of gifts.
  • Establish collegial relationships with pastors and the leadership of all existing and potential ministries who are served by the Stewardship and Development Office, market planned giving communications, and conduct information seminars and other speaking engagements to promote Church philanthropy.
  • Ensure timely correspondence and acknowledgment on gifts and recording all contacts in the donor database, prepare reports and summaries for donors regarding their bequests, trusts and annuities, and plan and execute the donor recognition policy.
  • Meet key performance indicators as established by the Senior Director of Development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Director of Development.
  • Attend required meetings and participate as needed.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the mission, goals, and priorities of the Stewardship and Development office
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Requirements:

  • BA/BS degree — preferably in communications, fundraising, nonprofit management, or equivalent professional experience
  • Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE), certificate in Estate Planning, Financial Planning, or equivalent experience preferred
  • Knowledge of planned giving vehicles such as Charitable Gift Annuities, Donor Advised Funds, and Charitable Remainder Unitrusts
  • Expertise in tax implications of charitable giving, estate planning, the probate process, and trust administration
  • Minimum of 5 years of development, marketing, accounting, financial planning, or legal experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required
  • 5 years of planned giving marketing experience preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, public speaking, verbal and written communication skills, strong work ethic, enthusiasm, and confidence, and the ability to lead and work collaboratively
  • Must demonstrate understanding, respect, and support for Catholic Church teaching, mission, and values
  • Above average computer skills in software such as Microsoft Office, Raiser’s Edge, Portfolio
  • Ability to read, write and speak fluently in Spanish or Polish preferred
